Why did you start Our Simple Hearts?
I was born into a chaotic world and time in Brasil. I spent some time living in the streets of Brasil. I've seen first hand how poverty destroys families and how life on the street soon becomes the only choice for the kids. I could of walked away from my experience, lived a life of any American, but no I decided that I would try to do something to help..

What are some challanges facing the children of Brasil?
There is still a big problem with the provision of basic services like health and education. There are families who are really struggling, and as a result children become victims of neglect and physical, psychological and sexual abuse. The problems are exacerbated by drugs and gangs, who entice children on to the streets. Today there are nearly 24,000 children living in appalling conditions on the street. We see seven-year-old drug addicts, and we once had a toddler who was found suckling her dead mother's breast. Institutionalising these children is not the answer because they are often treated like objects. I remember interviewing an eight-year-old boy in a shelter who thought his name was 19.Why do you think you can make a difference?
A fair and hard question for me. You see I don't think I am fit for this mission. To be honest I believe theirs is a pool full of people who are more educated, have their lifes fully set, are connected more in the I could hand the batton to just about anyone who could do this better, but their's more to this than I can even understand. You see there is this voice in my head and in my heart, One says your pain is your streangt. You can heal hearts. The other says take all you been given and make a difference change lives...No matter how or what I did to get here.
For far too long, I sat and watched and seen my people suffer. Poverty and injustice are the consequences, the result of human action and inaction. But if together we refuse to accept an unequal world, and hold decision makers accountable, a radically better world is within our grasp.
